Node.textContentは、Nodeのプロパティです。自身が含む全てのテキストを繋ぎ合わせて返します。値を代入すると、要素の中身は全て削除されます。

説明

textContentは、自身が含むテキストを返します。要素(Element)の場合、全ての子孫のテキストを繋ぎ合わせた文字列となります。値を代入した場合は、子ノードが全てなくなり、代入した値だけが残ります。

Nodeの種類によって内容が違います。

種類値
Element全ての子孫のテキストを繋ぎ合わせた文字列。
AttrAttr.valueと同じ値。
Text中身。
CDATASectionnull。
ProcessingInstruction中身。
Comment中身。

DocumentFragment全ての子孫のテキストを繋ぎ合わせた文字列。

似たプロパティにHTMLElement.innerTextがあります。textContentとHTMLElement.innerTextの違いは、br要素の取り扱いにあります。前者は、単純にテキストだけを繋ぎ合わせるため、br要素は取り除かれます。しかし後者は、改行文字に変換します。
